Swage Lag Screw for Cable Railing

  • Swage Lag Screw for Cable Railing
product description

Swage Lag Screws provide a surface mounted end for your cable railings and are typically paired with a Threaded Terminal or Lag Screw Turnbuckle. The Lag Screws are to be attached to wood surfaces and are good for indoor or outdoor applications. Swage Lag Screws are affixed to the cable using a hand crimper tool. They offer a streamlined, low-profile alternative to bulky turnbuckles, keeping your deck view clean and modern.

Key Technical Specs

Material: Standard kits are crafted from T316 Marine-Grade Stainless Steel to prevent rust and corrosion in harsh outdoor or coastal areas.

Cable Compatibility: Most frequently designed for 1/8-inch or 3/16-inch stainless steel wire ropes.

Pull-Out Strength: High-quality lag screws typically support a pull-out force of up to 580 kg (approx. 1,278 lbs) to hold structural tension.

How They Work (Left vs. Right Hand Threads):

Most inline swage lag screw systems require pairing a Left-Hand (LH) thread screw on one end of the cable run with a Right-Hand (RH) thread screw on the opposite end.

Tensioning: When you spin the cable body (or screw both ends in simultaneously using a specialized wrench), the opposing threads pull the cable tight from both sides without twisting or warping the wire.

Anchoring: The lag screw end bites directly into wooden balusters or posts, eliminating the need for back-side nuts and washers.

Step-by-Step Installation Basics

Mark and Drill: Map out your runs (typically 3-inch to 4-inch spacing) and drill precise pilot holes into your wood posts.

Swage/Crimp: Insert the raw cable end into the hollow barrel of the lag screw. Use a hydraulic crimping tool to compress the metal sleeve firmly around the wire.

Drive the Screws: Twist the lag thread into your terminal posts using the matching installation wrench often provided in standard kits.
