Stainless Steel Wide D Shackles
A wide D shackle (also called a wide-jaw shackle) is a variation of the standard D-shackle built with a significantly wider internal width and a longer pin. While it retains the straight-sided "U" or "D" profile of a traditional chain shackle, the expanded body design provides a larger mounting area and greater clearance. This allows it to bridge connections that are too thick or awkward for standard-width hardware.
Key Features Expanded Jaw and Body: The primary advantage is its wide opening, allowing the shackle to fit over thick hardware, bulky structural anchor points, or wide connection plates.
In-Line Loading Requirement: Because it is structurally a D-shackle, it is still engineered primarily for straight-line, in-line tension. It should not be used for multi-directional or angular side-loading, as side loads can twist or bend the extended pin.
Lower Relative Breaking Strength: Because the pin is longer, the span between the shackle walls is wider. This creates a larger leverage point on the center of the pin, meaning wide D shackles generally have a lower working load limit (WLL) or breaking strength than standard-width D shackles of the exact same material thickness.
