Swage Flat Head Terminal for Cable Railing This swage flat head terminal serves as a sleek, low-profile fixed end anchor for cable railing systems. It is prized for its ability to hide hardware completely, providing an unobstructed view. It sits flush against the outside of an end post, serving as a non-tensioning "dead end," while a tensioning terminal is installed on the opposite end of the cable run. Architectural Design Impact Maximizes Views: The thin, flat head eliminates protruding nuts, bolts, and turnbuckles on the outside of your deck. High Clearance: It provides extra space for high-traffic zones or tight spaces, making it perfect for gate cable railings where swing clearance is limited.
Wood vs. Metal Post Installation Requirements: For Metal Posts (Steel/Aluminum):Drill a clean hole through the post just wide enough for the terminal shank. The flat head rests directly flush against the metallic outer face. For Wood Posts:Drill a pilot hole straight through the post.Critical Step: You must add a flat backing washer or protective sleeve beneath the flat head. Without a washer, tensioning the cable will pull the flat head deep into the soft wood fibers over time, causing sagging. The Installation Process: Thread the Cable: Push the bare stainless steel cable into the open hollow shank of the terminal. Ensure Seating: Confirm the cable is pushed all the way down to the very bottom of the terminal cavity. Crimp / Swage: Use a specialized hydraulic cable swaging tool or standard hand crimpers. Compress the shank 2 to 3 times firmly within the designated swage zone to permanently cold-weld the fitting onto the wire. Feed and Tension: Push the wire through all mid-posts across your deck frame. Cut it to length, attach your tensioning hardware to the opposite post, and tighten to complete the run. Material & Sizing Selection For long-lasting deck construction, material quality and diameter compatibility are essential:T316 Stainless Steel Only: Always ensure fittings are made of marine-grade T316 (or 316L) stainless steel to permanently avoid rust and weathering on outdoor decks. 1/8-inch Systems: The standard for residential homes, offering a minimalist appearance while meeting safety codes. 3/16-inch Systems: Recommended for heavy-duty commercial projects, public spaces, or high-load architectural barriers.
