Stainless Steel Long D Shackle with Key Pin
A Long D Shackle with Key Pin is a specialized, elongated rigging connector designed primarily for marine and industrial applications. It features a narrow, deep "D" shaped body paired with a quick-release locking pin.
Key Anatomy & ComponentsLong "D" Body:
Unlike standard bow shackles, the straight legs form a narrow loop optimized strictly for straight, in-line loads. The extended length provides extra clearance to connect bulky lines, thimbles, or multiple eyes.
The Key Pin: Instead of a traditional long threaded bolt that requires multiple manual rotations, a key pin features a flattened head (or a specialized tab). It often locks into place securely with a quick half-turn or three-quarter turn, utilizing slot engagement or small integrated spring/detent features to prevent backing out.
Captive Design: On premium marine models (like those from Wichard), the pin is captive. This means even when fully unlocked, the pin remains permanently attached to the shackle body so you cannot accidentally drop it overboard.

Common Materials and Uses:
These shackles are almost exclusively forged from high-grade 316 stainless steel (or 316L) to ensure maximum resistance against saltwater corrosion and harsh weather.
They are most frequently used in sailing and rigging for:Attaching halyards to sails (often called a halyard shackle). Connecting lines through thick blocks, thimbles, or deck eyes.
High-vibration environments where a standard screw-pin could rattle loose over time.
