A Key Pin Shackle with Bar (often called a halyard shackle) is a specialized marine rigging connector that includes a built-in metal divider to permanently capture a rope or wire eye. It is specifically engineered for quick, one-handed operation on sailboats and racing yachts.
Core Components and Design
The Keeper Bar: This solid metal bar runs horizontally across the upper inside portion of the shackle body. It creates a dedicated, enclosed eyelet. When a rope (like a halyard) is spliced onto this bar, the shackle remains permanently attached to the line even when the main pin is opened. This prevents you from accidentally dropping the shackle into the water.
The Key Pin: Instead of threads, the pin utilizes a flat head and an internal locking slot or detent. It opens and closes completely with a simple half-turn, making it incredibly fast to attach or detach from a sail.
Captive Pin Design: Popular marine models designed, so the pin can not fall out of the shackle frame when open.
