Guidance on the Use of Eye Nuts and Eye Bolts

Mar. 28, 2022

Eyed nuts are fasteners with a ring-like head. They are designed to receive hooks or ropes. Eyenuts are suitable for different types of applications and are oval or round in shape. Load rated eyenuts are designed for vertical lifting, but are not recommended for use with angle lifting. Non-rated load eyebolt nuts are designed for use with tethering devices and wire guides. They are not suitable for lifting applications.

Materials

Eyed nuts differ in terms of material and surface finish. Metal eyed nuts can be made from the following materials.

Aluminum, brass, bronze, steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, titanium, and proprietary alloys.

Aluminum is lighter than steel, but not as strong. Brass and silicon bronze are common copper-based alloys. Many different grades of carbon and alloy steels are used as fastener materials. Stainless steel may not require a corrosion-resistant coating, but cannot be hardened to the same degree as carbon steel. Titanium is a metal widely used in the aerospace industry for special applications. In terms of surface treatment, eyed nuts are usually anodized, galvanized or plated with gold, silver, tin or zinc. Black oxide is a coating for eyed nuts that causes little to no dimensional change. Phosphate coatings provide corrosion resistance and a better surface for primer and paint adhesion. Eyed nuts with a zinc chromate finish are also available.

What are eyebolts used for?

Eyebolts are used for a variety of lifting needs and come in a variety of models - ensuring you can get the right support for your project. Eyebolts are designed to lift heavy objects vertically when other lifting equipment such as forklifts are not suitable. Traditionally, they were created to move transport equipment in situations where they could not be moved by hand.

Eyebolts are very simple in construction - they have a shank that screws into the ceiling or wall and an eyelet at the top to catch the rope or wire used to move the item. The mounting of eyebolts is usually made of wood or steel, and the bolt is held in place with a nut support whenever possible.

Uses of eyebolts

Eyebolts are very popular because of their high strength and relatively small size and ease of installation. The top five uses for eyebolts include:

Household uses where items need to be secured to the wall, such as industrial-style artwork.

Industrial uses for tensioning and lifting tasks.

Outdoor use, where stainless steel eyebolts can be used for equipment that is left outdoors year-round.

Concrete use where eyebolts are used to help join brick and concrete for a more secure finish.

For wood use, eyebolts provide security and anchorage for exterior items that need to be secured, such as lattice.

Because eyebolts come in many different sizes, they can be used for many different purposes in a variety of industries. You just need to know the maximum weight that the eyebolt needs to hold and the receiving material that it will be installed on so that you can get the right solution for each job that is completed.
