Round Copper Ferrules
A copper round ferrule is a cylindrical metal sleeve used primarily to terminate, cap, or reinforce the ends of wire ropes or electrical wires. Depending on your project, they fall into two entirely distinct categories: rigging hardware (wire rope end stops) or electrical wiring (wire crimp terminals).
1. Wire Rope & Rigging Ferrules (End Stops)
In rigging, round copper ferrules are known as button stops or end stops. They are swaged onto steel cables to create a permanent stop point.
Anti-Corrosion: Pure copper prevents galvanic corrosion when paired with stainless steel wire ropes in marine or outdoor settings.
Seamless Extrusion: High-quality varieties, like the Talurit RCU End Stop, are seamlessly extruded over mandrels for uniform strength.
Holding Strength: These are strictly for non-lifting applications; they typically hold roughly 50% of the wire rope's minimum breaking load.
Installation: They require a specialized hydraulic or manual compression tool to squeeze the round cylinder into a tight, permanent hold.
2. Electrical Wire Ferrules (Crimp Terminals)
In electronics and power distribution, these are soft, tinned-copper tubes crimped onto the end of stripped, multi-strand wires.
Fray Protection: They gather scattered core strands together, preventing stray wires from causing dangerous short circuits.
High Conductivity: Usually made of 99.9% pure red copper and coated in matte tin plating to resist oxidation.
Optimal Contact: Crimping a ferrule expands the contact surface area inside terminal blocks, decreasing resistance and heat generation.
Shaping: While the uninsulated metal sleeves start completely round, your choice of crimping tool determines if they finish as a square (ideal for block terminals) or a hexagon (ideal for round holes).
