Quick Release Detent Pin
This Quick-Release Detent Pin (also known as a ball detent pin or ring-grip pin). It is a tool-free mechanical fastener widely used across marine, automotive, and industrial equipment to quickly lock overlapping components into alignment.
Key Components & How It Works
Pull Ring / Split Ring: Located at the top, this provides a convenient finger grip to pull or push the pin easily. It can also be used to attach a security lanyard to prevent the pin from getting lost.
Shank / Pin Body: The solid metal rod (usually made of durable stainless steel) that slides directly through matching alignment holes.
Detent Ball: The small protruding sphere near the tapered tip. Inside the shank is an internal spring that pushes this ball outward. When you push the pin into a hole, the ball depresses smoothly into the shaft, and then snaps right back out once it clears the opposite side to keep the pin safely locked in place.
Common Applications
Boating & Marine Hardware: Very commonly utilized as a Bimini Top Pin to lock boat canopy frames, deck hinges, and anchor lines securely.
Fitness Equipment: Standard on workout benches, weight stacks, and adjustable racks to swap out settings or attachments quickly.
