What Are Spring Hooks, Buckles and Their Applications

Dec. 04, 2021

Snap hooks (also known as spring hooks) are hooks with spring-loaded snaps on the end to prevent accidental unhooking of leashes, ropes or other target lines. Snap hooks are a common but essential component in a wide range of industrial applications, from dog leashes to theater lighting.

With multiple snap types available, it may not be immediately clear which type is appropriate for a given application. HAIFAN will explore the different types of snap and their applications.

Spring Hooks

Spring hooks are equipped with durable springs that attach securely and quickly to ropes, cables, chains or other cords.

In its most basic form, the spring hook is a rough question mark shaped metal hook with a hollow section in which the spring loaded closure bar is mounted. There will also be a small attachment that grabs the spring hook and opens it when pressed with the thumb. When the knob is released, the door will quickly close with the spring loaded action.

Spring hooks can come from a variety of source materials, such as brass, stainless steel, and die-cast zinc. They can also provide different functions, such as:

Universal snap hooks. These snap buttons allow the operator to quickly change lures/rigging without having to re-tie the line.

Swivel Eye Snap. The swivel eye snap has an adjustable base that allows the spring to rotate along its vertical axis.

Trigger Catch. The user of the snap can easily press the lever, which then causes the spring door to retract inward and release the attached line. In practice, this means that the snap operator can easily attach or detach the line with one hand.

Climbing Buckle

A climbing buckle is a metal ring with a spring-loaded entry point that can be opened quickly to separate components of safety equipment, such as cables or lines. The only way to open a carabiner is to manually push the door away from the ring. This is a major difference between a climbing snap and a more traditional spring-loaded hook - a spring-loaded door can only release the rope or cord it is secured to when the spring-loaded door is pushed against the ring, not away from it.

Snap hooks vary in their design weight and the amount of force they can successfully withstand without breaking. Both spring hooks and climbing carabiners should have a kN (kilonewton) rating inscribed on their spine. This is the level of gravity that the snap can successfully absorb.

Applications

Snaps can be used in a wide range of industries and applications. Examples of common applications include

Sports equipment

Spring hooks keep volleyball and tennis nets level and tight. Facility managers at baseball fields may use them to support nets behind home plate. Spring hooks can also be used to secure a rifle sling, bird strap, or water ski. The sporting applications for spring hooks are virtually limitless.

Dog leashes.

There is a wide variety of spring hooks for dog leashes, with varying levels of cost and quality. Consider material, swivel eye vs. fixed, eye shape and eye diameter when selecting a spring hook type for a dog leash.

Awnings

Whether the awning is retractable or fixed, stainless steel spring hooks and other snap hook types often provide stable and adjustable support.

Marine hardware

Sailors can use snap hooks to attach to anchor chains, trailer safety chains, securing equipment or securing the boat to the dock.
