Different Types of Rigging Hardware: How Do I Choose?

Dec. 20, 2021

Wire rope, straps, hooks and other rigging hardware can be used in combination with cranes or other lifting equipment to move loads that are too heavy to lift manually. Many industries and applications use rigging to facilitate the movement of goods and materials on a daily basis. Rigging may be largely taken for granted, but the right choice can make the difference between a safe, successful move and one that causes property damage or injury.

Different types of rigging hardware

Rigging selection can be a complex process that requires many different forms of hardware manufactured specifically for specific weights, situations and environments.

Hooks

Used to lift heavy loads and eliminate material slippage, rigging hooks come in a variety of forms, each better suited to different weights and material types.

Eyebolts

Eyebolts are commonly used as anchor points for cables or wires and are selected according to the angle of the load.

Steel Nuts

In many rigging applications, steel nuts work in conjunction with eyebolts. Most steel nuts are made of type 316 stainless steel. Nuts include hex nuts, ball nuts, dome nuts, wing nuts, eyebolts, etc.

Wire Rope

Wire ropes are used for rigging, mooring and lifting operations. They are usually made of stainless steel and come in a variety of sizes and strengths. Wire ropes can be used with clamps, thimbles and sleeves.

Pulleys and pulleys

Blocks are necessary to lift very heavy loads. They do this by reducing the force required to move heavier objects. The most common type of block is the gripper block, but rotating blocks and square blocks are also viable options for specific applications. Pulleys come in both single and double types and are often used in combination with rigging ropes to safely hook objects.

Choosing the best hardware

With so many options available, it is important to differentiate each piece of equipment and identify the best fit for each unique lifting situation. The right choice of rigging hardware depends on many variables, such as the different weather conditions they must withstand, the materials they interact with, and the industry in which they are used.

Rigging is a versatile discipline. Divers use rigging hardware such as bolt carabiners and D-rings to secure valuable items to fins, masks, regulators, rebreathers and tanks. Spring hooks, anchor chains and trailer safety chains serve a similar purpose to sailing rigging hardware.

Depending on the work load, different harnesses can be used as saddle rigging hardware for horses. Rigging hardware can also be used for other recreational activities. Links, buckles, eyebolts and D-rings are all useful ways to stay safe while rock climbing or water skiing.
