What are Rigging Screws and Turnbuckles ?

Rigging screws and turnbuckles are sometimes referred to as a wire rope tensioner, bottle screws,barrel strainers or straining screws and are a special type of fitting which are used to enable the tensioning of wire ropes. Once fitted the tension of the rope can easily be adjusted whenever you need to, whether it is to tighten or loosen the rope. All that is needed is to turn the main body or barrel. They are commonly used in rigging applications and anywhere that the wire will need tightening to a unique rigidity to fit its objective, for example, bridges, balustrades, staircases and hanging shelves.They are often utilised for use as barriers (instead of fencing) to avoid access to certain areas or as a safety barrier. For example they are used on castle ramparts to allow the public to be able to walk around them safely, yet they do not intrude too much on the original nature of the buildings. Rigging Screws have the closed barrel type center and so look more aesthetically pleasing whilst Turnbuckles have an open body/center piece which turns around the visible screws. The definition of a turnbuckle is type of coupling which possesses internal screws that are used to connect two wires or rods, end to end in order to adjust the tension.

Also known as adjusters, bottle screws, tensioners or simply rigging screws, these traditionally designed toggles are created from excellent quality 316 grade solid stainless steel bars. This bar is then polished to produce a mirror finish.

Stainless steel rigging screws with toggle ends and swaged studs represent a specialized category of marine and industrial hardware designed for applications requiring both adjustable tension and reliable terminal connections. These components combine the versatility of traditional turnbuckles/rigging screws with the permanence and strength characteristics of swaged fittings, making them particularly valuable in sailing, architectural tensioning systems, and structural cable applications.

With the screw body itself and the toggle at one end, and the swage stud on the opposing end, these studs are specially manufactured for crimping on to the end of stainless steel wire rope.

Ample toggle straps are also designed to take the full weight of the load on either side of the eye and pin. This adds extra safety in that they won't fail due to an unbalanced or moving load. Generally used in conjunction with locking nuts, rigging screw toggles come in a mix of different combinations and are also suitable with Marine Bodies or Open Bodies. They are also resistant to humidity, salty air and sea water.

Rigging screw toggles / swage studs are particularly deployed in wire rope rigging jobs on yachts and sail boats and in leisure and sporting industries.

Toggle End Rigging Screw

The toggle end provides exceptional articulation capabilities, allowing the rigging screw to accommodate angular loads and movement without binding or creating stress concentrations. Unlike fixed eye terminals, toggles can pivot freely in multiple directions, making them ideal for applications where the load direction may vary or where the connected components experience relative movement.

The swaged stud end offers a permanent, high-strength connection that eliminates the potential failure points associated with threaded terminals or mechanical fittings. During the swaging process, the stud is cold-formed into the cable or rod end under tremendous pressure, creating a connection that often exceeds the breaking strength of the parent material.
